  1. New Britannians, You may have seen our recent press release about a joint exploration with our friends over at Neverdie Studios. They believe, as do we, that the contributions of players within virtual worlds is of great value that should be rewarded with real value. Neverdie is currently creating a set of universal tokens built on the Etherium block chain with plans to reward players with these in-game tokens. We find this idea... 2. Today we announced a partnership with Neverdie Studios to support the company’s Initial Coin Offering (ICO). Neverdie Studios produces games, live action movies, records and virtual products. Their ICO is a blockchain-based project aiming to create an Ethereum-based gaming platform. Shroud of the Avatar is the first game outside the Neverdie product lineup exploring how to utilize Neverdie Coins (NDC). The two companies also announced today that Garriott would become an advisor to Neverdie Studios. “We are devout believers that people living in and contributing to our virtual worlds can and should earn real world value for the time and value they bring to our world,” said Garriott, Portalarium’s CEO and Shroud’s creative director. “Having direct access to a publicly tradeable currency is a great way to provide this. I’m also extremely pleased to be invited to advise Neverdie on this exciting and ambitious project. Additionally, Shroud of the Avatar already has a deeply committed player base while in early access. We are exploring how our players can earn market based value with NEVERDIE NDC and TPT tokens that are both useable directly in the game as well as traded on the open market. To learn more about the offering and how you can get Neverdie coins, visit the official ICO page. The copy above came from today’s press release. View the full article

  4. We will be kicking off this week’s Community Livestream by giving players a first look at all the new changes making their way into both Aerie and Vertas scenes! Esteben “SorcerousSteve” Zaldivar will be driving the master build machine as we explore around the scene and discover its hidden secrets. As we are focusing on the Path of Truth we are spending time to not only polish the story elements (dialogue, NPC names, quests, etc.) we are also updating visuals along the path as needed. For Release 44 this includes polishing the visuals for three of the towns you visit along the Path of Truth: Aerie, Vertas, and Jaanaford. Each of these towns is getting updated to include more color (especially blue, the color of Truth), more visuals related to Truth (books, libraries, statues of the Titan of Truth, etc.), and general polish (terrain, foliage, etc.). For more about Aerie, check out SorcerousSteve’s recent Dev+ blog update in the forums. After these changes go live, we have even more content, including quests, you can look forward to in future releases! The fun begins on Twitch this Friday at 4pm CT. Also join the community watching on Discord chat to ask questions about this scene. View the full article

  6. Shadow’s Rest is a Player Owned Metropolis due West of Brittany, along the coast of Lake Equitas. The town is the headquarters for the A Rose From Sequanna services offered to members of the community and welcomes all members regardless of reputation, guild affiliations, or other neutral status. Founded in Marse 3rd, 482 PC, Shadow’s Rest was a small holdfast residing along the source of the Oso River in Norgard. Aidenolm Rosemourne built his home in that location in hopes of one day bringing peace between the Kobolds and Avatars in the area. With his extra land deed he allowed anyone who needed a home to stay for free. After a few seasons it became apparent the location in Norgard was a difficult journey and few were willing to make the trip. A decision was made to pack up and move the town outside of Brittany so anyone in need could benefit from the town, without having to commit to a pilgrimage. As more Avatars came to New Brittannia, Aidenolm began to acquire additional land deeds to ensure homes were always available. He started with a single row home and offered basement space for others. Next a crafting hall was built and filled with expert crafting stations he acquired from around the world and the locks were removed to ensure no one would ever be denied access. Once that was finished he turned his gaze back to housing. He had built five more row homes before Avatars started asking for garden space. After a season, greenhouses were commissioned and two public gardens became available to anyone who asked. For the next couple of seasons, homes continued to get built and after a while a park was developed to offer a spot for social interaction as the Avatars returned from their journey. Avatars continued to come and go, occupying the homes as quickly as Aidenolm could build them. It wasn’t long before additional expansion became necessary outside the town’s walls. Aidenolm constructed an oracle observatory so anyone could receive funds from the Oracle directly. Next, a pavilion was built with the purpose of educating Avatars as they come to New Britannia, or look to gain knowledge in other crafts and skills. While the guides are not complete as of yet, they continue to be published and updated regularly. And while knowledge is power, practice makes perfect! Aidenolm removed his home from the island in the middle of the lake to make way for a new training ground for Avatars to utilize. He constructed stairways with sharp falls for avatars to practice their falling without real risk of injury. Training dummies were constructed with a stage and bleachers for classes and vendors were blackmailed persuaded to offer their services on the grounds to ensure Avatars never ran out of reagents or arrows while training. Lastly, with the influx of Avatars only needing a room and not a whole house, Aidenolm built two inns within the town’s walls. Currently, Shadow’s Rest has 30 inn rooms and 20 row homes to offer to avatars who need a home and continues to offer a full array of services to assist the community as a whole. We hope you enjoyed this latest spotlight of a Player Owned Town! If you are interested in settling into Shadow’s Rest, contact Aidenolm Rosemourne. And if you have a Player Owned Town, or live in one that we should be spotlighting on this series, please contact community manager Berek. View the full article

[From a Dev+ Forum Post by Esteben “SorcerousSteve” Zaldivar] Making of Hallowed Plains On the outskirts of the Boundless Forest and to one side of the Broken Road is the Hallowed Plains, a sacred site to humans because of a massive battle once fought in this location. Kobolds do not have the same respect for this land and have begun building along the road despite protests from locals. This scene was temporarily a clone of another scene but is being completely rebuilt. We hope to have the Hallowed Plains ready for Release 44. [A Dev+ Forum Post by Chris “Sea Wolf” Wolf] Making of Grannus Colossus SPOILERS: Now that all three paths (Truth, Love, and Courage) are playable we are finishing work on the Finale part of the plot, aka The Path of the Oracle. Crucial scenes along that path are the Colossus scenes, of which there is one for each Titan and the Oracle. So far we have released the Oracle, Boreas, and Sequanna Colossus scenes. We are now working on the last missing Colossus scene: Grannus Colossus. This scene was temporarily a clone of another scene but is being completely rebuilt. We hope to have the Grannus Colossus ready for Release 44. In the last decade this relationship has formalized with the growth of Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and marketplaces like the Unity Asset Store. Most recently communities can even gain ownership via equity platforms like Seed Invest. Using projects like Shroud of the Avatar, 25 year game veteran Starr Long will describe this evolution of Crowdsharing and share techniques. If you are in the Seattle area next month, swing by PAX Dev to meet Starr! Photos From Last Week’s RTX Event We took dozens of photos from our attendance at RTX Austin last weekend! Check them out on the game’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/shroudoftheavatar: Lord British’s Birthday Telethon: YouTube & Missed Questions Answered YouTube Version of Telethon: Usually we have the YouTube version of our telethon and the missed questions posted the same week as the telethon. However the combination of the telethon being on a Thursday and RTX being the next day meant we did not get those accomplished until this week. Here is the YouTube version of the telethon for those of you who missed it: Missed Questions Answered: We had 19+ pages of questions left unanswered after the Lord British Birthday Bash Telethon! With assistance from the team we were able to get to those questions and we posted them to the forums yesterday. Here are the questions that we did not have time to get to during the LB Birthday Telethon. I tried my best to answer these (with help from the rest of the team) but some we just don’t have details yet to provide. I probably won’t have time to do any follow ups to these. The community did a great job assisting us this telethon to make sure we didn’t miss a single question. July is a crazy busy month for us with R43 just having gone live, RTX, Comic Con, and the Seed Invest campaign. So please forgive the brevity of some of my answers. Also please note I deleted a bunch of duplicated questions and also deleted any questions that we answered with the Q3 post or with the release of R43. I also deleted questions that were super open ended, were super vague or were needlessly confrontational. Brugas: Will there ever be more spell scrolls added to the game with the current spells system and perhaps new & unique magic and/or ancient spells (similar in nature to old UO spells). We add new abilities (including new spells) to the game about once per quarter (sometimes more often). Murphy: Do we have any news on Coat of Arms items ingame? We hope to return to work on this in Q4. Billy Bologna: Will we see barbers in the game allowing us to change our appearance? Or maybe a magic mirror? There are several “New You” salons in the game in major cities like Ardoris where you can change anything about your appearance. Billy Bologna: Great job on the mail system! Will we see a “sent mail” tab in our mailboxes in the future? Yes Animosh: Does Esteben “SorcerousSteve” Zaldiva like Iron Maiden and can he shred it on his guitar? SorcerousSteve said that yes he does and yes he can. This is because of Libris Ruins isn’t it? [Read More…] Shroud in the News: VentureBeat, KXAN, Fox7, MMORPG For yet another week it continues to be quite an exciting time for us and the press. The combination of our SeedInvest campaign, the launch of Release 43, our Q3 Schedule, Richard at Gamelab, and RTX has all generated quite a lot of attention. Here are a few of the best highlights: The VentureBeat: During Gamelab Dean Takahashi over at the DeanBeat interviewed our very own Richard Garriott, about the entire span of his career (and life) in an interview based loosely around Richard’s book Explore / Create. Dean then transcribed that into an article entitled: “Ultima creator Richard Garriott looks back on nearly four decades making video games”. The article also includes a video of the interview. Richard Garriott has had a wonderful life in video games. But the founder of Portalarium and creator of the Ultima series has also done quite a bit outside of video games, with enough adventures to last five lifetimes. He coached a featherweight boxing champion. He almost starved during a journey on the Amazon River. He almost had a fatal rock climbing accident. He had to pull a gun on an overly enthusiastic fan who broke into his home in Austin, Texas. Yet, he creates legendary haunted houses for Halloween, welcoming everybody into his home. Like his father before him, Garriott journeyed into space. While he was up there, he showed a secret message to his Tabula Rasa online game fans while on a communications link back to Earth. And he journeyed to the bottom of the sea to get a close-up look at the Titanic. KXAN News: Local NBC News Affiliate KXAN News aired a piece about RTX where Shroud of the Avatar and Richard “Lord British” Garriott featured prominently entitled “Austin’s annual RTX gaming convention set to be biggest yet” RTX is underway in ATX and the annual gaming convention is expected to draw its biggest crowd yet. RTX is led by Rooster Teeth Productions, an Austin-based company that created the popular Red vs. Blue web series. The convention is where gaming meets the Internet and where gamers find their great escape. “It’s how you get through bad days, it’s how you get through good days, it’s how you make good days,” said one attendee. Lord British — as he’s known to fellow gamers — created a medieval role-playing game called the Shroud of the Avatar. The game won’t be released until the fall but he recognizes the way Austin ups his animation ante. Fox7 News: Local Fox News affiliate Fox7 News aired a piece about RTX where they interviewed a gamer who traveled from Wisconsin to visit the show in a piece called “Gamers Paradise”. Shroud of the Avatar and Richard “Lord British” Garriott featured prominently in the text version and in some of the background footage. Get ready to be schooled on video games. This year’s epic Rooster Teeth Expo attracted thousands of people from across the globe. Gamer Jack Rowell drove all the way to Austin from Wisconsin to attend R.T.X “We drove here 18 hours we got here yesterday. It’s pretty cool here in Austin,” said Rowell. This year’s newest game is set to be a crowd pleaser Shroud of the Avatar Forsaken Virtues. “The controls are pretty simple and it seems like it really has a cool story. I’m going to have to check it out,” said Rowell. It’s a role playing video game that takes you on a mystical spiritual journey. Players will adventure through an interactive world where their choices during ethical paradoxes have consequences. Portalarium C.E.O Richard Garriott came out to greet fans and give some pointers. Garriott said it takes around four years to develop a game. “It’s a game that has a lot more depth than just fighting monsters and collecting treasures,” Garriott said. “You can actually dial up from a solo player game to a traditional mastered multi player game.” MMORPG.com: Garret Fuller recently interviewed Richard about Shroud’s current status and our goals for the end of this year in an article entitled: “Richard Garriott – Goals, Milestones, and Expectations” Last week we got the chance to talk with Richard Garriott about the state of Shroud of the Avatar and all the upcoming milestones for the game. Many people continue to watch the progress of the game closely as backers and players get ready for the full release of the game. Early Alpha and Beta phases have been tested heavily by fans. Now Richard explained that they are making the final 20% push into release. It is a time of polish and adjustment which Richard finds to be the best aspect of game making. What will the rest of the world think? Richard said that the goal of the year is to complete work on Episode 1. The milestone would launch the complete story for people to play through. Even though they are no longer wiping characters from the early testing, it may be time to start anew and experience the whole journey. They have had their 43rd monthly release and continue to deliver on time each month based on their schedule. With Episode 1 players can go through the plot lines of Truth, Love, and Courage leading up to the finale. Free Trial 4 Continues Through July 26! Welcome to the latest Free Trial Test period for Shroud of the Avatar! This trial test (#4) runs from July 3rd thru the 26th, and is the longest test so far of the system so that we can gather even more data about uptake, drop-off, conversions, etc. These tests are invaluable for us in order to improve the New User Experience and the Free Trial System. Free Trial access allows you to play the entire game in any of the Online modes with a few key differences in game play. You will be able to explore hundreds of scenes, talk with thousands of players, adventure through the opening quests, and gain experience and skills as you get used to the world of New Britannia! 15. Get those eye popping video ideas ready, Avatars! Like last year’s trailer design contest, this is your chance to show that Shroud of the Avatar is both the game, and community, that new players will want to play to launch and beyond. The ‘Welcome to New Britannia’ Community Trailer Contest kicks off today! You have from July 13, 2017 (Now) to August 18, 2017 (11:59 PM CT) to design a video trailer for all New Britannians to admire. Capture shots of key city districts, bustling player-owned towns, luxurious houses, intense combat, majestic outdoor scenes, crafting valuable goods, or any of the other amazing features of our game that you think will help sell the game to other players. Key features to highlight include: Sandbox RPG Selective Multiplayer: Offline Plus 3 Online Modes (Single, Friends, & Open) Multipath Story by Richard Garriott and Tracy Hickman Classless Character System Dynamic Combat with Customized Decks Player Driven Economy Deep Crafting System Player Owned Housing Housing Decoration System Player Owned Towns etc… Below are the details of the contest, including what you can win! SELECT A THEME Theme 1: Complete 1-2.5 minute trailer. There’s so much content one could add to such a trailer of this length, but most importantly, it should all be of high impact value. The more exciting and powerful it is for broad audiences that don’t already know what Shroud is about the better! Example 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv4nPNagoT4 Example 2 (using Animoto): https://youtu.be/AL4SUG-UKPs Example 3 (w/voiceover): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbN6aqgGtuc Theme 2: Short 30 seconds or less advertisment video. For such a short video, high impact and quick to understand imagery is going to bring your video to life. Example 1: (different game theme, focus on the camera cut style, and don’t forget to include an exit slide!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yptYN0hT1Q Example 2 (similar to above): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAC0YF2iM2c Example 3 (combat focus): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68wCCTPhFE8 Example 4 (textual teaser): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtIDkKKg7Q4 Also, we recommend you check out all the videos from the previous contest! http://bit.ly/2ujj1VI Examples are of the highest quality, so don’t worry about trying to duplicate them. They are only basic guides. Some of the ways you record footage will be limited to our camera system. Do the best you can and have fun with your own ideas on what a trailer should include! Both themes can contain textual cut-scenes and audio explanations if you wish, though we suggest limiting these and letting the scenes explain the game itself. This includes carefully selecting what kind of Shroud approved music (anything from our game or is completely free for public use) works with the visuals. Please be sure to mention in the submission post which theme your video is designed around. WINNERS & PRIZES Trailers will be judged by a team at Portalarium on the following merits: Keeping to the Shroud of the Avatar world (Only SotA footage) Overall originality and artistic flair (Don’t overdo it! Quality: For optimal game recording quality, set all game settings to their max Scale back game settings if framerate drops consistently below 30fps Audio: Must have at least some music, sound effects only at the intro and exit scenes as needed, and voiceovers are not necessary. Also consider keeping gameplay sound effects low, or turning them off entirely. Music is usually the only main audio you need. Contains a “Created by:” message at the end scene, as well as a Shroud of the Avatar logo either in this same scene or elsewhere. Must list the official website URL at the end of the video: www.shroudoftheavatar.com Your video must be shareable on YouTube. Submit your trailer in the community forums with a title, description, why you created it, and a YouTube link to the trailer. VIDEO RESOURCES There are plenty of tools out there to use to put together a gameplay trailer! Some online web suggestions would be Animoto.com, Flixtime, and Stupeflix. Production tools include Adobe Premiere, Cyberlink Director, and Sony Vegas. As long as the trailer adheres to the contest requirements, you can use any software at your disposal. There are many ways to create great trailers! We recommend you start by considering if you want any graphics at the beginning of the trailer to introduce it, as well as exit slides (including the “Created by:” message in the end scene). One of the examples we provided above is a super duper fancy Animoto.com version, so don’t feel obligated to abide by that structure. Click here to download our Media Kit that includes additional logos and items for your video. You are also required to save raw footage in case we would like to reuse the footage in future videos. Please do not send raw footage until we ask though, unless it is via an easy to use link that downloads the footage in one path. 18. Hello everyone, this is Asclepius, with a further instalment of this wonderful story from Elgarion, entitled The Tavern Respite Background music “Tavern Song” by Ome the Bard Chapter 3, “The Two Companions” After a long week of arduous travel and an amazing evening of adventure, Elgarion returned to his chambers above the common room of Bear Tavern, kindly offered to him by Balec, the absent proprietor. The note Balec had left him was thoughtful, and Elgarion made certain the basket was well utilized for the ale he and his friends had imbibed that eve. The mere notion that Balec would have the forethought to think of him, caused Elgarion to ponder and to become certain. The old sorcerer made a mental note–if Balec had his best interests in mind, this refugee from Kahli would pay in kind. Somehow, and soon, Elgarion would reward Balec for his generosity and commitment to fine service. Setttling himself, Elgarion sat at his desk, and began to write in his journal, recounting the lessons and peculiarities of the day’s happenings. When I had returned to Bear Tavern that evening, already inside was a man with whom I had become recently familiar, Stryker Sparhawk. Stryker was engaged in dance with a charming female, whose lithe movements caused me some embarrassment Her unseemly motions were befuddling to me, and alas, (as any gentleman would) I averted my eyes and sat upon a stool at the ornamental oaken bar, instead admiring the wooden creation likely crafted by the careful hand of a fine artisan. She departed, her name I do not recall. But then Stryker and I accounted of our week’s journeys in stride, as if meeting every seven days had become the norm. Shortly after, another arrived. Blake Blackstone, the dwarf. He strode in and quickly sat to my left. It was good to be amongst friends. We drank the fine brew of Bear Tavern, leaving coppers and gold in the basket as Balec had instructed, and told tales, most of which, I now struggle to remember. Balec had made mention that recording the conversations of his patrons had left some… rather uncomfortable. So now I attempt to record well after our encounters and am likely to forget much of what transpired. All for the sake of propriety. Blake Blackstone mentioned a man whom I must most definitely seek. A historian, of sorts. A rare profession, and rarer yet to find one bearing talent for that calling. I hope to make his acquaintance. Enderandrew. A most unusual name. And also one, unforgettable. Certainly he must know of the populaces still in this world which might have existed from before The Fall. He most certainly, can help this lost soul. Again, the Doomsayers. The Outlanders. Stryker and Blake both spoke with worry. Neither had encountered a Doomsayer, but I did learn, that Outlanders… many of the very people I have met, to include Blake and Stryker, consider themselves as such. They even stated I was one. Certainly, I played along, but why do they believe this? It seems the Outlanders are common and apparently accepted. The peoples of this world are so different from before. I have much to learn. And as Stryker and Blake suggest, I must seek an elf by the name of Bowen. For he holds the key to these Doomsayers. If I were mistaken to be an Outlander by friends, would these Doomsayers make similar assumption? My explorations might become unnecessarily… challenging, if so. As if our topics had not delved into enough gloom, I broached the subject of The Undead. Upon my first meet with these fine folk, they had expressed much concern over the Undead which plagued the wilds. Now, they made mention of a Spirit Speaker which enticed an apparition to speak. “Malice” was the word it had said. I assumed it was a place, and Stryker thought specifically, a dungeon. Catacombs are home to many of the unliving. Perhaps our next encounter, I might coax some of the brave souls in Bear Tavern to speak more of “Malice”. Imagine what histories I might uncover amidst the treasures of the entombed. With companions, perhaps I might even journey to such a place. And, lastly. Highiron. The city belonging to an organization known as the Tantalus, if I recall the dwarf’s words correctly. On a whim to show us his home, Blake summoned such magic to transport us there. I did not know that such sorcery existed in today’s world, but this spell — I must learn it. I can’t even begin to imagine how my search for Kahli could be hastened if I possessed such power. Alas, the journey proved uneventful. Highiron is a grand city, with a unified people. I met another there, their planner, Harry. The city’s beauty was a testament to his devotion. But as quick as we had arrived, the tour was cut short by night fall, and to PaxLair I wished to return. Blake stayed and I returned with Stryker, also possessing such magics of transport. Perplexing. I am truly awed by the powers of these… Outlanders. Before I retired, I looked across the common room. Empty. Candles waned. I had hoped to see the one called, Amber. She had made such an impression upon this old weary man, last we met. I suspect her library to reveal many answers to the riddles which toy with my perceptions. Perhaps soon, I can enlist her aid. Thus far, PaxLair has offered me sanctuary. The people of PaxLair have shown me friendship. And I suspect this individual can render much aid to my cause. Now, in my chambers, I prepare for another night of torment. I know what the darkness will bring to my dreams. The limbo, my prison for so many years, will take me again. At least as I slumber, I will return to my people, even if only as a conjuration of my haunted mind. My place is with them, and to that end, I will not stop until I find them. And free them. I take some solace, that in some way, I will return to them tonight. The post Tavern Respite 3 – by Elgarion – narrated by Asclepius appeared first on Echoes from the Caverns. View the full article

  25. Hello everyone, this is Asclepius, with a further instalment of this wonderful story from Elgarion, entitled The Tavern Respite Background music “Tavern Song” by Ome the Bard Chapter 2 – Return to Bear Tavern Elgarion shuffled his way down the darkened hall to his chambers above the common room of Bear Tavern, an establishment which twice now has brought him the comfort of a fine ale and friendly folk. The door opened with a squeal, which comforted him to know unannounced guests would likely be heard. Setting his sack of books and scrolls upon the desk, he quickly cast aside his boots and sat with intent upon the desk’s chair, pulling out his journal again with quill and ink. Balec had just warned him that some of the patrons were not taking kindly to Elgarion’s scrivenings, consisting of their names, their stories and even sketches of their personages. “Bah… how indeed will I remember all that is said? Though, the man does make a point.” He stated to the air in the room. Certainly a proprietor of such an establishment had learned, through the years, what his patrons prefer. Elgarion decided to rethink how he would document the happenings of Bear Tavern, or in the least, try his best not to offend those most secretive. Recollecting the past nights discussions, the venerable sorcerer spent another hour before succumbing to sleep, recounting this evening’s tales and news of lands abroad. They spoke of the horrors of starvation after The Fall, and the drunkard even spoke as if he was there, during that time. Could these merely have been the imaginations brought on by ale? Many spoke of these stories, however. The dwarf, called Blake by those present, said there was a place, The Bluffs, which harbors deep caverns beneath. Caverns which housed the starving masses after the cataclysm. I suspect, strongly, that if these catacombs are littered with the dead of those lost during the Fall, likely, their most precious belongings were lost within. Diaries accounting of these horrid times are likely to be found. Perhaps even survivors from Kahli hid within the labyrinth. I must find these tunnels, for amongst the remains of the fallen, the fate of Kahli might be revealed. Again, the drunkard spoke… almost in riddles. A grimoire of ancient origin. If I can speak to this man away from prying ear and watchful eye, perhaps he will reveal more about the nature of this text. I will introduce myself to him next we meet. And perhaps, I can get a few words from him before he loses his wit from drink. The one called Kazyn Phoenixfyre… he has knowledge of an ancient city which bears a name most familiar. Could it be that Trinsic existed before the Fall? Could I know this city? If he holds texts which detail the origins of such a place, surely there could be mention of Kahli. And only… I can only dream this to be true, but if Kazyn knows the location of Trinsic, and I can learn of Kahli’s relative position from it? At last I might have found a way to Kahli. If I am so lucky. The history of Trinsic must run deep. A tale of Tel’Anor Arator, The Phoenix Egg, seemingly speaks much of its greatness. A city which apparently took its insignia from that same runic symbol. I will certainly pick the brain of this Kazyn, a man seeming most receptive to conversations of times forgotten. And again, the dwarf spoke. Daedalus. Weeping Seven. Cryptic words for a confused soul, such as I. Next we meet, when words become sparse and uncomfortable silence ensues, be assured, I will ask questions of these. The answers I seek could lie in any tale or news from abroad. I must not discount any possibilities. The lady. They called her Amber. She overheard the ramblings of my weary lips from a weary mind. I perhaps embarrassed myself with such bold blatherings of my quest for knowledge. But alas, she took a kindness upon me and offered a most valuable and generous gift, an invitation to view her extensive library. I was confounded by surprise and possibly a little flustered from the wine. I most certainly will take up her most gracious offer and somehow repay her in kind. The Book of the High Priestess. It will be the first I ask to see. Clergy, often granted divinations by the gods, chronicle well the histories of each era. I doubt not that this libram might hold valuable knowledge. But from what era? I will soon know. And with Amber’s assistance with translations, my work will go quickly. Elgarion De’Kahli turned the journal back several pages, stopping for a moment upon each. The sketch of the tavern from this evening, the sketch from the week prior reminded him of other conversations which he had nearly forgotten. Hastily, he jotted them down, his penmanship suffering as his weariness grew. His notes from before, he read them again, aloud to himself. “Nothing… I asked… nothing,” the old man grumbled to himself. All the notes from the week prior, the questions he intended to ask were never broached. Now, the list had lengthened. So… so many questions. No answers. The start of so many tales. Whispers of places unfamiliar. The undead. Piles of books unread. Elgarion sighed deeply, then closed his journal and capped the ink. After wiping the quill clean and dousing the candle, he set his studies aside for the evening and turned to the bed, lying down upon the feather mattress. Again, staring into the darkness of his chamber, he quickly slipped into sleep. The Void had claimed him again, and this dream would not bring answers. It only brought fear.
